The Art of Bathing

Japan, like any other country, maintains customs and traditions coming from its religious practices and ancestral beliefs as well as from its way of enjoying its natural resources. Land of volcanoes and thermal springs, Japan has taken advantage of these natural resources to develop a unique art in which is that of bathing.

The Art of Bathing does not consist in taking a bath from time to time to wash oneself but in a religious ritual coming from Shintoism and from a philosophy of life which integrates nature into the space of our daily life. Thus, the bathroom in Japan is a very special space.

Sento, Ryokan & Onsen: A Culture of Relaxation

We can obviously find a bathroom in each habitat with a corner shower and a bath like anywhere; on the other hand, in each district of the big cities and in the villages of countryside, you will find Japanese bath house called “SENTO”, a kind of public bath house where you can relax, have a drink, eat, take a nap, get a massage and even play ping pong.

Not to mention the famous traditional inns called “Ryokan” where you can enjoy a wide variety of thermal springs arranged in such a way as to spend a moment of great relaxation in a bucolic setting.
